code art compilations

<-see inside

RAN DUM 1 is a compilation and catalog reproducing several code art prints, some experimental pieces, and early randomly-generated digital comics. Everything was drawn by writing custom PostScript code. I wrote a brief essay about working with randomness, and how the more complex works grew from the earlier, simpler ones.

RAN DUM 1 is full-color, 28 pages, 8.5"x11", glossy laminated cover, 200 copies. Published 2005. Brief text by the artist. Price is $12.00, plus 3.00 postage, within the US. Available directly from the artist.

instant code art sketchbooks

In 2010 and 2011 I adapted my RAN DUM LOOP code to make a series of instant digital sketchbooks, each one filled with cartoon style graphic designs and eye candy.

After I spent a few weeks testing, revising, and re-organizing the code, it generated each book in a few minutes. I had the code make several covers, so I could choose the ones I liked best. I used online book printers Blurb and Lulu to make one copy of each book, in a square hardcover format, either 7 or 12 inches square. Page counts range from 120 to 440.

For each page, the code randomly chooses a color scheme, a drawing style, a page layout, and a procedure to draw varying faces, figures, scenes, or abstractions. I never know what it will draw next.
